MTA signs just a little out of date

by Benjamin Kabak

On my way to JFK Airport via the IND lines this morning, I spotted the sign above at Nostrand Ave. on the A platform. The JFK AirTrain has been up and running since December of 2003. Anyone wanna bet that the signs at the much more heavily-trafficked Columbus Circle stop were changed well before three and a half years of no shuttle bus service had elapsed?

Ha – a friend of mine missed her flight because she tried going that way and didn’t want to pay the extra money for the Air Train.

Uh, no offense to your friend, but that’s pretty stupid.

I told her that too 😀

What’s worse is that there’s a shuttle bus that goes directly to all three airports a few blocks away.

Not really surprised. There are still signs that show the B going to 168 and the C to the Bronx on uptown IND lines, and that service ended 10 years ago. Last week I spotted a orange S bullet on a sign at Herald Square, too.

They have the same outdated signs at Hoyt/Schermerhorn and Jay St. I don’t want to venture a guess as to how many people have missed their flights because of this.

It’s unbelievable that nobody even thinks to take the initiative and make signage easier for people, not to mention correct and up to date. I mean, who is the manager of Jay St./Borough Hall, a major stop in Brooklyn? Do they ever go down to the platform and look around? Laziness? Don’t care? Worst of all, incompetent enough to actually not notice the outdated signs? It’s mystifying.
