Honestly, I never found it annoying, and I don't think any of my friends did, either. Also, at my NYCT station, 116th-Columbia University, I managed to briefly make a phone call a few weeks ago. I take the #7 train, and I hate hearing everybody's idiot conversations. I don't speak Fujianese but I can still tell you're having an idiot conversation, and I still don't want to hear it. Jack, there's a big difference between a train passing (which is loud, but "white noise,") and someone yapping about how lame their friends are. There's been cell phone service at Pavonia/Newport - one of the PATH stations - for a few years now (5? 6?) and I've never been bothered by anyone hollering or being obnoxious.
