The MTA consistently wastes millions and millions with one hand while crying poverty with the other. There needs to be some serious oversight with their budget before the city starts handing over billions. I agree with your assessments with the school fares (the MTA should get that money immediately - though I suppose they're waiting for Albany to give the city what it's owed) but when I read about other wasted projects and especially having a manager per subway line (I'll assume with a staff - how many millions will that waste? Why can't the people in charge get this done without adding layers? Meanwhile they take clerks out of stations and create unsafe environments especially late at night) it's hard for me to be fully sympathetic and hand over extra money.

Wait, so Roger Touissant is saying that MTA is not being given enough money? That's a lot like somebody kicking you in the nuts, punching you in the face, taking all your money and then telling you that you berating you for not having more cash on you. Honestly, that's pretty priceless. How far could we really extend the 7 if we the MTA only had to only pay the employees it actually needs? Staten Island?

Good post Ben. To follow on my points from the other day . . . the MTA board still has 5 appointees from Pataki . . . Spitzer, to my knowledge has only been able to appoint one person to the board this far . . . Hemmerdinger.

So, when we blame the MTA Board for not being aggressive enough in seeking funds from the state and city, we also have to remember that overall, the vast majority of the MTA Board are Republican appointees. I think that goes to the heart of the problem.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with CP. . . I think we'll see something with elements from the Ketcham plan for starters . . . which might be the best option . . . a cost-effective trial that can be expanded fairly easily.
