At what cost dignity?

I’ve never really wondered how much it would take to get me to lick a subway pole. $100? $1000? I probably wouldn’t do it for even that much. But someone did it on Long Island Rail Road train for just $20. Via New York City Metblogs, comes this lovely video. It’s not for subway squeamish or the germaphobes among us.

Do you think he kisses his mother with that mouth? [NYC Metblogs]

It’s all a rip off of the Simpsons. In the season 9 premiere, “The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson,” Bart pulls a similar stunt on the subway.

While riding a train, Bart gets everyone’s attention, and proceeds to explain that he was born without taste buds, and to demonstrate, he’ll lick the pole. Mid-lick, he proclaims himself to be out of his league.

While that episode is one of my all time favorites (in part because of the fabulous representations of NYC), it will unfortunately never again be aired in the NY market. The episode prominently features the Twin Towers, along with the now horribly inappropriate line “sorry about that, they put all the jerks in tower 1.”

The episode is available on DVD, and is highly recommended, if only to see Bart on the subway, not to mention the Port Authority Bus Terminal…

Interestingly, over the years I’ve proposed a similar yet even more disgusting dare to friends — monetary compensation for licking the floor of a subway car. A pole is chump change compared to the floor, I’d say.
