A recent, unrelated development made me think that the 7-extension isn't really such a bad idea after all. Mayor Bloomberg says he is going to implement a network of commuter ferries, starting with one that starts in the Rockaways in Queens, then to Brooklyn, and to Pier 11 near Wall Street in Manhattan.

I laughed at this "wonderful" idea since there is no subway that connects to Pier 11 - at least not until the Second Avenue Subway (entire line) is completed - and I don't see ferry commuters wanting to transfer to a bus to finish their commute.

Bringing a subway to the far West side might open the door for a ferry from New Jersey, or perhaps the Bronx or even farther up the Hudson, with a reasonable connection.

As for the whole Hudson Yards thing -- I thought the terms would have been pretty clear when bidding opened. It's kind of silly to award something to the high-bidder without knowing exactly what each one is bidding on.
