How the service cuts will impact you

By

William C. Thompson, NYC comptroller and 2009 mayoral hopeful, has unveiled a tool for the public that highlights the MTA service cuts. While advising his constituents to tell Albany to do something about the hike, Thompson’s office is now presenting an MTA service cuts finder. Just drop your ZIP code into the form, and the site returns all of the cuts targeted to your area. It’s a sobering reminder of what may happen if no one acts before March 25.

I typed in a southern Brooklyn zip code and it told me there will be fewer B trains between 2 and 5 a.m.

    Fewer than the current zero?

The service cuts will just bring the rest of the system in line with the already crappy service I “enjoy” on the R. Except Astoria seems to be spared for some reason. Probably because I left the neighborhood just before they chose to double service there. Sigh.

I can’t prove it, but I have noticed that it seems like the MTA is quietly doing some of these cutbacks already – for example on certain buslines it really feels like they are running less buses. As I said, can’t prove it but . . .

  4. That application is missing a little report on whether your assemblymember took a public stand on congestion pricing, and what weasel words they used. It does have a link to keepnewyorkmoving.org, where you can contact your state legislators.

Thompson has been in charge of city finances for seven years now. Anyone with that level of knowledge ought to know that paying to maintain four “free” bridges – and the car trips they generate – with general tax revenue is bad policy, both fiscally and environmentally. But Thompson is apparently more concerned with avoiding angering powerful Queens politicians than doing the right thing for the city. Sad.

I will cut the V train
