I'm showing my age... And I have been on the subway regularly since then.. Back in the 60s you couldn't talk on the subway, especially during the summer when the windows were open, it was too noisy.

On the L line for the hundreds of millions of dollars that were spent they are able to run exactly ONE more train during the rush than before the new technology.

I think the MTA should allow cellphones to work in the tunnels, not just in the stations. The subways already aren't quite with the load rumbling, screeches and people yapping, so adding cellphones won't make much of a difference.

What's most important is that we increase our capacity to communicate, which is vital to keep New York as a competitive global city.

As a DC resident, most folks don't yap on their phones too much, even if they can talk. However, having the ability to send and receive text messages, use web-enabled phones, etc is a nice perk.

I would have thought the novelty of "I'll be home in ten minutes" would have worn off about ten years ago. Oh well. One of the few good things about my regular train (the R) is that it is entirely underground.
