I grew up in Rochester. Upstate New York is in no way, shape, or form "socially liberal" (except for Ithaca).

No, polls show the majority of state residents as supporting single-sex marriage. Downstate New York has the same politics as Massachusetts, and Upstate is unusually socially liberal (it's the region that helped legalize abortion in 1970, by a margin of one vote).

I'm pretty sure gay marriage was DOA regardless. This isn't a cozy little homogeneous New England state. A lot of our liberals are socially conservative union workers or religious figures, which isn't so much the case in the states where it passed.

Right now, though, I can’t imagine the Republicans doing anything to upset the current rescue plan.

Even if they wanted to repeal it, they could do nothing without the Assembly, which Democrats control by a secure margin. The trouble will be what happens when the MTA comes back for the next installment.
