What a perfect metaphor for the US in general: The biggest and best in original construction, with no concept of a maintenance/replacement program. Just like our cars and so many other things. At least the MTA should get the full $4500 cash for clunkers station benefit.

Fantastic point Peter. If Bloomberg actually wanted to help transit rather than just pretend because he is running for an illegal third term, he would up the city's contribution to an acceptable level. I am shocked that this isn't brought up in the media more often.

The real point in this story is the detail that even Jim Dwyer buried near the end of his NY Times story - that the City contributes approximately 80% less funding to NYCT than it did 25 years ago, nothwithstanding grandstanding by the Billionaire Chief Executive.
