I don't know why I bother to respond to this nonsense, but I'll wearily continue to try to inject some truth into this farce. To fixate stubbornly for 80 years on an idea that cannot be realized is not an example of an A+ project; in an individual it would be described as a mania. Cities and their representatives can clearly go nuts, also. To repeat ad nauseam, the subway is not being built. Not one inch of it has been built. And nothing will be built until they resolve this little problem of three buildings on teetering foundations. That will take year(s) to correct. Phase one is going to cost at least 6B and take at least another 10 years. By that point who knows how many times fares and taxes will have been raised to pay for it. And who knows how many lives will have been destroyed by its criminally-negligent construction.

Good point, Kid Twist!
AND, coming to think of it, that means that 100 years ago that area HAD rail rapid transit. Now, it does not.

Many people think that the BIGGEST mistake in NYC history was the razing of the old Penn Station.
It WAS a big mistake, but an even BIGGER mistake was the razing of the 2nd Ave. and 3rd Ave. els without the immediate beginning of the construction of a subway to replace them.

In the early 1900s, they disrupted the full 9 miles of the first subway line at the same time with cut and cover construction.

It's better to be quick about it than to try to prolong everything.

It's not the US - it's New York. In San Francisco and Los Angeles, subway construction is budgeted at about $250 million per route-km, compared with $1.7 billion per route-km for SAS.

Also: none of the subway lines in Tokyo (or any other city except Seoul) has multi-track sections, except lines that run both local and express trains and need some place for express trains to overtake locals.

The third track was not in the original design (it was added later), and many comparable junction points do not have anything similar. Remember, it was not a third track for any appreciable distance, but only at one station.

While it would have been marginally helpful and I was sorry to see it go, I do not consider it a serious loss. Most of the construction cost is tied to the cost of excavation, so "leaving space for it" would not really have been an option. Either you build it or you don't.
