A permanent free out-of-system transfer there would generate a substantial revenue loss, with people making round trips on a single fare (many of them probably not even planning on it). I assume there will be paper tickets, as are commonly used for shuttle buses. I highly doubt anyone forgot.

There are only two out-of-system transfers in the system, and both were instituted to compensate for the loss of other transfers that were taken away when service was rerouted (the F to 63rd) or cut back (the G to Court Square).

Now, I do wonder why the new South Ferry station doesn't include an enclosed transfer to Bowling Green. The two stations are very close!

Nothing is simple or done "easily" (hence the use of quotes) in this agency. To reprogram turnstiles to support a two-weekend service diversion would be revolutionary, but I tend to believe Jay Walder's early December observation that "the MTA doesn't do technology." Perhaps the folks who came up with the so-called alternate simply forgot, and paper transfers will be instituted at the last-minute.

I also saw those Scott, and was equally befuddled. To my knowledge, there has not been a free transfer between the two stations since the Bowling Green-South Ferry Shuttle shut down in 1977...though one imagines that free transfers via MetroCard can be "easily" added with some simple programming steps (ala 59th Street/63rd Street transfer).

Wow, that's quite a comprehensive wrap-up. Congratulations on your excellent blogging/journalism for the year! But "Top Ten stories"... are those the ten best stories, or the ten with the biggest impact?

Meanwhile, and I imagine you'll touch on it in tomorrow's weekend service advisory post, I saw posters yesterday about two weekend closures of stations on the 2/3 between (and including) Park Pl, Fulton, Wall, Clark, and Hoyt St. The advisory suggests using "the free out-of-system transfer between the South Ferry 1/2 station and the Bowling Green 4/5 station". Has there always been a free out-of-system transfer between Bowling Green and South Ferry? I've never seen it on a map.
