From Brazil to NYC, an R160 arrives

by Benjamin Kabak

A few weeks ago, Transit announced that it had accepted the delivery of the final R160 units. With that order of cars, the next push to upgrade the rolling stock would involve the R179s, and the city’s fleet of subway cars is getting newer all the time.

Yesterday, in a great behind-the-scenes glimpse, the good folks at Transit’s NYCTSubwayScoop Twitter account published a series of photos concerning the new rolling stock. They traced the origins of the car from its production in Brazil to Hornell, New York, where the cars are assembled to the train yards in the city where the cars are put on the rails.

My favorite shot is the one atop this post. The new car is wrapped so nicely, and when the engineers at Transit open it up, they’ll find one of 1662 new subway train cars awaiting service.

And yet we still can’t get any next-gen cards in the A/C. Why does the E get all the love? Why?

I’ve seen R44s on the C the last couple days, I consider this an improvement. It should be time for the R32s to go, but apparently they’re sticking around another five years.

Because the R-160’s are concentrated in three maintenance shops, not scattered around the system randomly. The maintenance shops that serve the A and C (and also the D) don’t have any R-160’s.

The only lines that could run R-160’s but don’t are the B and G.

As long as your air conditioning is working, I don’t see why it really matters.

And the G runs R160s whenever it’s replacing the F to Stillwell, like it did last weekend. Even had FIND configured properly and voice recordings.

well I’ll have to take your word for it, I can’t follow twitter. too many messy sentences of no importance, where are the pictures?

oh and I hope those trains with the orange and yellow seats never get replaced, they are the best. never too cold, a good place to relax, and with clearly defined seats with space to put your bag underneath it is harder to get 50 dollar tickets for taking up two seats at 2 in the morning. my dream is to one day make enough money where i don’t have to ride the subway anymore.

My dream is to live where bad ass cops don’t give tickets if your bags are not on the dirty floor in an almost empty car at 2 a.m. But then again, I’d be surprised if that ever happened to me, cuz I’m white.

Noah, if you aren’t white, I have some very bad news for you about the cops.

If anyone is ARRESTED and arraigned in criminal court for placing bags on seats in the wee-hours of the morning (rather than merely being issued a summons to go to TAB, please contact the NYCLU.
