Weekend work impacting four subway lines

by Benjamin Kabak

We’re getting closer to Christmas. Without snow on the ground, it’s still easy to see that as weekend work has slowed to a crawl.

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, December 15 to 5 a.m. Monday, December 17, Manhattan-bound A trains run local from Broadway Junction to Utica Avenue due to elevator work at Utica Avenue.

From 11:45 p.m. Friday, December 14 to 5 a.m. Monday, December 17, Coney Island-bound D trains skip 167th Street, 161st Street and 155th Street due to track maintenance work at 167th Street.

From 11:45 p.m. Friday, December 14 to 5 a.m. Monday, December 17, R trains operate between Forest Hills-71st Avenue and 34th St and Q trains operate local in both directions on Broadway between Canal Street and 57th St-7th Avenue due to signal work in the Montague Tube and adjoining areas.

Finally, they’re installing elevators at Utica Ave.

Are they going to install elevators at Forest Hills-71 Ave any time soon?

Yes, they’re installing elevators at Forest Hills-71 Avenue Station now. Not sure of the timetable, but they’ve been working on this for nearly 6 months now.

Oh. I’d heard about it here: http://bkabak.wpengine.com/201.....-upgrades/ but I was not sure it the MTA was still working on the project.

Also, which switches, if any, exist at 167th Street?

I meant to ask, are there sidings?

I’m wondering why would there be a siding, that crosses 3 active tracks, in the first place

That’s a very good full-size map of the NYC subway.

There is a flaw to the map, however. There is no distinguishing features between the revenue tracks and the non-revenue tracks. Also, where there are several levels to a station (e.g. the stations on the 8th Avenue Line between 59th St and 110th St) there is no indication of the division between levels. Overall, however, I like it
