Map: The subway coffee map

New York Coffee Map

I’m always a sucker for a good map and even more so when it’s actually a subway map with a related gimmick. Here’s a good one via Reddit that’s been making the rounds. It’s a mash-up of the best Manhattan coffee shops by subway stop. Click the image above for a larger version; it should open in a new window.

Now, as with any of these “best of” maps, there’s bound to be debate. Eataly, for instance, is a bold choice for the 23rd St. BMT stop, and Pier NYC on Roosevelt Island is a seasonal outdoor food spot without much of an emphasis on coffee. But with the exception of a few dry spots — that Dunkin Donuts at 110th St. on the 2/3 sticks out like a sore thumb — it avoids chains and Starbucks. Now, imagine the same for the city’s bars or restaurants or even an expansion into Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx.

This could be a whole new app with filters for whatever you are looking for at each station.
Given the useful importance of maps for visitors and locals alike, it’s curious that the MTA doesn’t post the close-up neighborhood area station maps on their website.

Could you imagine this concept applied to Starbucks or Subway? You wouldn’t be able to see the actual map, but I like the idea.

You can get to those neighborhood maps through the Weekender. I’m not sure why they make them so inconvenient to find though.

New York coffee has certainly come a long way.

Eric

Coffee everywhere has come a long way. In the US, I give Starbucks credit for raising the bar for everyone in every town.

And as this map shows, there are still great independent shops everywhere.

London also used to have bad coffee but man it is of a really high Italian standard now I think

Since when have Italian coffee standards been high?

It says a lot about either the reach of gentrification, or the widespread appeal of posh coffee (I’m guessing the former), that just about every single corner of Manhattan has coffee shops with names like “The Chipped Cup”.

Yep. And the least gentrified ‘hood is Harlem, which are the stops where they had to put D&D, Starbucks, and worst offender: “Samen” for the 125th 4/5/6. It’s just a standard grungy bodega and nobody in their right mind would seek it out for coffee.

Indian Road is on there… spectacular! Too bad Mud in the East Village isn’t particularly close to any stops.

Poor Marble Hill never catches a break when it comes to being included on Manhattan maps.

I had that thought too, but it probably would’ve been either the Dunkin Donuts on Broadway or the Starbucks outside the Target there.

Put Au Bon Pain on that map! Their coffee is very good.

No Starbucks? How precious.

I know this is off topic, but could you write an article regarding the madness of today on the subway? I was caught in the power outage this morning on the IRT 7th Ave Line in Upper Manhattan which caused overcrowding on the Central Park West subway, and in the context of the constant snow, I think the problems with the subway related to the cold weather have grown significant enough to merit some attention.

Perhaps you have more information about that than I do at this point; I can hardly find an article describing all the chaos of today.

I’m trying to figure out if it’s weather related. The problems today may not have been due to weather, but I’ll see what can do. It’s just been messy lately, but hard to say why.

Interesting; They remembered that Roosevelt Island is in Manhattan, but forgot that Marble Hill is also.
