Sandy repairs for the A/C’s Cranberry Tube as weekend work affects 12 subway lines

by Benjamin Kabak

This weekend marks another milestone in the MTA’s ongoing post-Sandy repairs. It’s the first of ten weekends this year during which the A and the C will not run through the Cranberry Tube. All service will instead be rerouted via the F line between West 4th St. and Jay St.-Metrotech. Transit notes that over 1.5 billion gallons of water flooded this tunnel during the storm.

This phase of the repair project is, unsurprisingly, starting a few months later than expected and will not wrap until mid-2016. There will be ten weekends this year without service through the tube and 30 more planned for next year. The MTA is hoping to wrap the project and restore service early, as the agency was able to do with the R train. All in all, this isn’t a terrible project as nearby subway lines can carry the load.

I really do not like to be critical, however it appears that the travel advisory information presented above is for the weekend of August 1 to 2, last weekend.

On the subject of tunnel closures, those Village Voice articles you posted talked about how the CBTC projects are taking too long, in particular, the case of the 7 train right now, which seemed to have some Sandy-related closures and some CBTC-related closures. Is it mutually exclusive to do Sandy-related work while building CBTC infrastructure?

Are all these dates current?

Looks like the express run from Grand Central to Brooklyn Bridge was cancelled.

I really dont understand why these just dont close one tube at a time, and have the A and C run via the F until West 4th. That way, the work gets done quicker

Like close the Manhattan bound tube, have the displaced A and C run Via the F to West 4th, then vice versa

This would mean having the A, C, F, and M sharing the Houston St local tracks. But if this decreased the construction time significantly, it might be worth it.

The A+C+F+M during the rush is 50tph at least. However, with some creativity it could be done. All of the following assumes one tunnel would be open at all times and the other closed at all times.

-A trains run via Rutgers southbound 12mid to 12pm and northbound 12pm to 12mid.
-C trains run the same as A trains. However, from 8-9am Brooklyn-bound C trains will terminate at Chambers on the closed-tunnel track and layup between there and Fulton. During this time trains stored between High St and Jay will be used to provide Euclid-bound C service in Brooklyn. Between 5 and 6 pm this will repeat but in the other direction: Manhattan-bound trains will terminate at Jay and layup, while layed-up trains between Fulton and Chambers will enter 168th St-bound C service.
-F trains will operate as normal.
-M trains will operate as normal, except that select contrapeak runs will be terminated at Whitehall (southbound) (signed as R) or Chambers (northbound).

How are you terminating trains at Whitehall? If you run them through the 60th street tube, that tube is already at capacity

The 60th St tunnel runs less than 25tph during the rush hour. It is not at capacity. If necessary, some northbound Q trains can turn short at 57th St. This would ease congestion at Ditmars terminal as well.

Yeah, you can’t do this weekdays. I thought Yan’s suggestion was to do *weekend* work in only one tube at a time.

It’s possible on weekdays too. Heck, in 1998 Lenox was single-tracked for several months, with a service pattern similar to my proposal. 2 trains ran via Lex in the ‘wrong’ direction, and with the exception of about 10 trains each way in the rush hour peak direction all 3 service ran to 137th St.

Can it be done in one or 2 weeks. If so maybe they could do a full shutdown.
