OK so why do they have to point at the black/white stripped sign?
I see it said to show that they are paying attention but to what? who monitors them? what happens if they don’t point at the sign?
If the conductor’s position lines up with that black and white sign, it means that all of the cars are on the platform. If the conductor cannot see that board in front of him or her, that means either the first/last car or cars are not on the platform and when they they open the doors a passenger not paying attention might stumble out onto the tracks.
Not doing so would probably be considered a safety violation of some sort and the crew member would be dealt with accordingly.
Oh OK, a STRIPED sign.
The only time when the subway has to do with anything that’s STRIPPED is the day when they have that “No Pants Subway Ride”.
Note these book mini-reviews on the Times website,
especially the SECOND one:

Completely off topic, but it was interesting, while watching NBC’s Sunday Night Football game tonight, to see in the promo for Monday’s episode of “The Blacklist” what looked like Transit Museum car 9306 pretending to be a WMATA train — full R-33 World’s Fair Bluebird paint job, but with some red-background ad stuck to the side of the car for something in Washington.
It went by too fast to really get a good view of it, but after all the times I’ve seen other cities’ subway lines used as stand-ins for New York, it was strange to see a retired IRT car pretending to be one from the Washington subway. I’ll definitely DVR the show Monday night to see exactly how the scene is used in the show.
The weirdest show I ever saw in terms of trains standing in for other trains was an episode of Leverage which used Portland MAX to stand in for WMATA.
Spoiled the episode completely, especially because the writers hadn’t bothered to hide the fact that there’s no third rail on MAX, and had people running up and down the trackbed. 😛 Complete failure of suspension of disbelief.
