(42nd Street Shuttle)
During the weekend, the 42nd Street (S) shuttle extends operating hours through the night and early morning hours in order to provide cross-town service due to the 7 suspension between Times Square and Queensboro Plaza.

A few things before the service advisories: First, Second Ave. Sagas is turning five, and I’m hosting a party. Details and the RSVP site are right here. I hope you all can make it.

Second, this weekend marks the start of Phase 3 of the Culver Viaduct rehab project, and the MTA has a whole slew of changes for Brooklyn. Starting Monday and continuing through the spring, the follow changes are in effect:

• No Coney Island-bound F or Church Avenue-bound G service at 15th Street-Prospect Park and Ft. Hamilton Parkway stations.
• All southbound trains stop on the express track at Church Avenue and 7th Avenue stations.
• Coney Island-bound F and Church Avenue-bound G trains are accessed via a temporary pedestrian overpass to a temporary platform at the 4th Avenue-9th Street station.
• Smith-9th Sts station remains closed.

The changes are not without controversy. While this time around Brooklyn residents are prepared for the changes, the recent spate of groping incidents and attempted sexual assaults have the neighborhood on edge. City Councilman Brad Lander has asked the authority to provide more buses through the area, but the authority declined. So neighborhood patrols will instead try to provide safe walks for those uncomfortable trekking home during the winter while these stations are shut. It’s a less-than-ideal situation.

How about a little news roundup before the weekend? I didn’t have a chance to cover these stories this week, but they do deserve some attention.

First up, the LIRR. The ongoing disability scandal reached a temporary denouement this week as 11 people were charged with fraud in a scandal that may have cost the government as much as $1 billion. Among those facing charges are seven retired LIRR workers, one ex-union president, a federal employee, a doctor and an office manager. A second doctor will be facing charges as well. While this is a scandal that largely impacts the federal retirement benefit panel, the MTA is tangentially at risk financially due to increased health care premiums for retired employees. This story is far from over.

Next up, something lighter. Helvetica has a competitor underground. As David Dunlap explored at City Room today, because of signs promoting the 9/11 Memorial, the familiar MTA font is no longer alone. Dunlap notes that seeing these signs throughout Lower Manhattan is a bit jarring. He writes that “standardized signage helps everyone navigate a system cobbled together by different builders in different eras, at different levels, with different architectural styles and different kinds of trains.” The new wayfinding font certainly sticks out.

From 12:15 a.m. Saturday, October 22 to 4:45 a.m. Monday, October 24, there are no S shuttle trains between Broad Channel and Beach 90th Street due to the rebuilding of piers and bearings on the South Channel Bridge and the replacement of drain pipes between South Channel Bridge and Hammels Wye. Shuttle trains operate between rockaway Park and Broad Channel. (See A entry for shuttle bus information.)

It’s a tough weekend to travel into Brooklyn from the West Side. There will be no 2 or 3 service south of Chambers St. Yuck. Otherwise, not a bad weekend. SubwayWeekender has the map.

Before I jump into the regular services advisories, though, I have a note from Transit on station reopenings in the Bronx as the five-year, $89-million effort to renovate Pelham Line stations wraps up. Says the release:

MTA New York City Transit announces that the Elder Avenue and St. Lawrence Avenue 6 stations rehabilitation project is near completion and they will reopen at 5 p.m. Sunday, October 16. Subway service will resume at both Elder Avenue and St. Lawrence Avenue stations which have been closed for eight months in both directions in order to accomplish station renovations.

Fare-free boarding on local buses and the late night extension of the Bx4 bus service in the area will be discontinued.

The project included new mezzanines, new platform floors, windscreens, tactile warning strips and canopy roofs, as well as electrical upgrades and the installation of fluorescent lighting. While service at these stations will be restored, there is still work to be completed, including the installation of new interior and exterior wall panels and the upgrading of the stations’ electrical and communications systems.

The stations will also be painted and artwork will be installed in the platform windscreens and mezzanine windows. The entire rehabilitation is scheduled for completion in early 2012. This will mark the end of the $89 million five-station renovation on the Pelham 6 line which included: Whitlock Avenue, Elder Avenue, Morrison Avenue-Soundview, St. Lawrence Avenue and Parkchester.

Note: At all times until Friday, October 28, the southbound D is bypassing 71st Street due to stair reconstruction. So, there is no D service at 71st Street this weekend. During the day, Manhattan-bound D trains skip 53rd Street and 45th Street. Customers should use the R instead.

From 11 p.m. Friday, September 23 to 5 a.m. Monday, September 26, there is no G train service between Court Square and Bedford-Nostrand Avs due to *deep well rehabilitation north of Bergen Street. Free shuttle buses provide alternate service. (*The deep well facilities pump out ground water, keeping water levels below the subway structure in order to prevent flooding. The wells vary in depth from about 60 ft. to 85 ft. below the sidewalk. This weekend’s work involves upgrading the currently outdated, individual control systems for six deep well facilities in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn along the G line. The installation of fiber optic cables routed to each well will connect them to one another and to the NYCT network to allow for a more efficient ground water control operation in the section of the G line that they serve.)

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, September 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, September 26, there is no Q train service between 57th Street-7th Avenue and Prospect Park due to tunnel ceiling inspection and structural repairs. For service between 57th Street-7th Avenue and Atlantic Avenue-Pacific Street, customers may take the N or R. For service between Atlantic Avenue-Pacific Street and Prospect Park, customer may use the free shuttle bus.

Due to a water main break near 110th Street and Central Park West, New York City Transit is anticipating severe service disruptions for the A, B, C and D trains this evening. As of around 3:50 p.m., B and C trains are suspended from end to end, and A train service is suspended between West 145th Street and 59th Street-Columbus Circle. The D is not operating between 161st Street-Yankee Stadium and 34th Street-Herald Square.

Transit says it will be providing shuttle train service on the Concourse (D) Line between 205th Street and Yankee Stadium in order to allow customers to transfer to the 4. A similar shuttle train will from 207th Street to 168th Street to allow for a connection with the 1, and subway-bound straphangers leaving Yankee Stadium have been told to take the 4 train. Metro-North will cross-honor tickets from Yankee Stadium to Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central.

According to a report from DNA Info, the main that broke is a 30-inch tube that’s approximately 100 years old. MTA crews are currently pumping out water that’s covering tracks at stations from 103rd to 125th Streets along Central Park West and St. Nicholas Ave. Although four pumps are working to remove 6000 gallons of water per minute, Transit does not yet know when regular service along these IND routes will be restored. Get ready for a fun commute home tonight.
