Update (2:00 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20): For the last few weekends, getting around the city has been far from easy. This week, for instance, riders trying to take the G at all or F from Jay St. to Church Ave. are confronted with some bed travel choices. The trip now involves taking a shuttle bus servicing the G this weekend and switching to another shuttle bus that services the F from Jay St. to Church Ave. The buses run fairly frequently and offer reliable service, but most people would rather not have to suffer through subway and bus rides for what is generally a one-seat trip.
As one might imagine, New Yorkers aren’t too happy about these constant changes. People are upset with the 7 line work in Queens and are despondent over the G outages in Brooklyn. That is, however, the cost of upgrading the system, and for other lines, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.
Per a Transit press release, those passengers who rely on the A and C at Broadway/Nassau are in for months of pain as the Fulton St. project proceeds apace. Here are just some of the changes in place from now until July with more to follow:
- March 6 and 13 – The northbound A is operating via the F line between Jay and West 4th Streets; the southbound A will bypass Fulton Street/Broadway-Nassau; there is no C service.
- March 19 – The A bypasses Fulton Street/Broadway-Nassau in both directions; there is no C service.
- March 26 – Northbound A trains will stop at Fulton Street/Broadway Nassau; southbound A trains will be rerouted via the F line.
- April 3 and 17 – The northbound A operates via the F from Jay to West 4th Streets; the southbound A bypasses Fulton Street/Broadway-Nassau; there is no C service.
- April 10 and 24 – Northbound A trains will stop at Fulton Street/Broadway Nassau; southbound A trains will be rerouted via the F line.
- May 1 – The northbound A operates via the F from Jay to West 4th Streets; the southbound A bypasses Fulton Street/Broadway-Nassau; there is no C service.
- May 8, 15, 22 – A and C bypass Fulton Street/Broadway-Nassau in both directions.
- May 29 – The northbound A operates via the F from Jay to West 4th Streets; the southbound A bypasses Fulton Street/Broadway-Nassau; there is no C service.
- June 5 and 26, July 10, 17, 24, 31, Aug 7 and 14 – No A or C service at Fulton Street/Broadway-Nassau, details to be determined.
Transit promised additional changes throughout the year as the need arises. Sounds like fun to me.
Anyway, you know how the rest of this works. The changes after the jump come to me from the MTA and are subject to change without notice. Listen to on-board announcements and read the signs in your local station. To see these changes in map form, check out Subway Weekender.

amNY had an article today on residents “fuming” over the constant shut-downs on the #7 line and the need to take shuttle buses. They should really run a shuttle on LIRR from Woodside to Long Island City. There’s an easy transfer from LIRR to #7 at Woodside, the LIRR Long Island City stop is near the #7 Vernon-Jackson, and the LIRR Hunterspoint Av stop is right next to the #7 Hunters Point stop. Neither LIC nor Hunterspoint (LIRR) typically offer weekend service, so it’s not like the tracks are full. If they’re really nice, they could cross-honor all the way to Penn.
Don’t ask why LIRR writes “Hunterspoint” as one word, while NYCT writes “Hunters Point” as two. I have no idea.
Forgot to mention in the above comment — it’s good to see them fully taking advantage of the closure by working four different projects simultaneously.
The “Hunters Point” matter reminds me of something that I read a long time ago:
The subway station is called “BEVERLEY Road”, while the street is called “BEVERLY Road”.
Coming to think of it, when I was a child in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn in the 1950’s and early 1960’s, our Sea Beach Line station was called “22nd Ave.”. The trouble was, the name of that STREET was “Bay Parkway”, and it had been that since long before my time.
We lived right near the “Ave. O” end of the station.
I’ve just done some further checking up, and if Wikipedia is correct:
The street’s name IS Beverley Road.
The Brighton line station is correctly named Beverley Road.
The #2 and #5 lines station is incorrectly named BEVERLY Road.
Not so fast, Jerrold!

Thanks for the link!
THAT article gives the reasons.
Ben, could you please send NYCT a tweet informing them about SubwayWeekender? I’ve asked Shawn to do this, but he says he has no twitter account.
A few notes regarding the 7 train changes:
Long Island City is providing a free shuttle bus from Vernon/Jackson to Grand Central, see here: http://www.ny1.com/1-all-borou.....fault.aspx
The Q train is not running to Astoria this weekend.
There are two extra shuttle bus stops, per NYCTsubwayscoop: Jackson Ave at 50th Avenue, Jackson Ave south of Queens Plaza South.
The G-Train story is the longest and most detailed ever:

Why don’t they extend the g shuttle bus to Church Ave?
And why does 7 train work have to do with some N trains terminating at Whitehall st
Since the N is offering companion service to certain areas of Queens during the 7 outage, Transit needs to turn around the N faster than usual to make up for lost capacity.
I think what you’re trying to say is that normal weekend N headways aren’t adequate to accommodate people transferring from the 7 at Queensboro Plaza in addition to the usual riders. Extra N service is operating to serve that market, but it’s running to Whitehall (like the W) rather than to Brooklyn, since there’s no need for that extra service in Brooklyn and Whitehall’s a convenient place to terminate trains.
The past few weekends, the Q has been extended to Astoria for the same reason. I don’t know why that’s not being done this weekend – with the concrete pour at Union Square, it seems to me that extending the Q would be less disruptive than essentially running a fourth Broadway service, which will have to share the local track with the other three. At the usual weekend 8-minute headway, that comes to 30 tph total, which I’m sure isn’t feasible. Maybe each of the services is cut back to a 12-minute headway, for a total of 20 tph. But that would mean that the Brighton and Sea Beach lines, which presumably have increased loads this weekend due to the F shutdown, are running less frequent service than usual!
