About Second Ave: “70 track miles at 5 million dollars a mile”
If only.
Unbelievable, isn’t it? And remember that was for a 4-track line!
US Bureau of Labor Statistics:
$5,000,000 has the same buying power as $45,967,016 in 2010.
And if the cost cited is per track-mile instead of route-mile, then it works out to a little below the average cost of subway tunneling in Europe.
Man, the Grand Central IRT stop looks downright dingy and scary. I’ve NEVER seen so many people at that stop at one time, even after 30 years of riding the Lex and getting off at 42nd St hundreds of times. Even with a local and express pulling in simultaneously, I’ve never seen such crowds pushing and shoving. Give me today’s subway any day!
nyc used to have a lot more class
Really? How so?
You didn’t go out in public unless you were dressed well enough for church.
“tracks clear, Empire State rising”
Thanks Ben, that’s a great holiday gift for your readers!
I really miss the sound that the trains used to make as they were speeding up.
Yes, a long and wide Second Avenue Subway was coming soon,
and that was 61 years ago.
Why does this film have a Mystery Science Theater 3000 feel to it?
