Updated (4:45 p.m.): At approximately 1:51 p.m., a earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck near Richmond, Virginia, and the shocks were felt up and down the east coast. Currently, however, the MTA says everything is fine with their network. A Transit spokesman told me there is “no impact on service” from the quake, and the MTA just posted a similar statement to Twitter. “There are no impacts to subway, bus or LIRR or Metro-North service as a result of the earthquake,” they said. While JFK and Newark airports have been shut down, PATH reports that its trains are operating normally as well.
Later in the afternoon, the MTA issued another statement: “Operating personnel conducting preliminary inspections and have not observed any immediate indications of earthquake damage to the MTA network.” It sounds as though everything will be A-OK for the evening rush. I’ll update this post if anything further develops.

The strange thing is that here in the West 20’s, I did not feel anything. I first found out about it when a friend from Brooklyn called me up about it.
Same. I’m in midtown and I didn’t feel a thing.
I slept through it…
I sure felt it in midtown. My whole office building shook.
This is getting REALLY weird.
I felt nothing here in Chelsea, but they felt it in Brooklyn and in the Bronx.
One person here felt it in Midtown, but another did not.
I was walking home from the bus stop & didn’t feel a thing.
Fitting that an earthquake took DSK off the front page.
I was working in NJ (Hackensack, to be precise) the building we were in shook for a good 45 seconds.
I was underground at the PATH station at Journal Square (Jersey City), one level below-ground, one level above the tracks – and didn’t feel a thing. I wonder if those buildings are constructed differently because of the vibration of trains.
Hmm, 5.9 in Virginia, from the point of view of NYC, would basically be classed as “dinky little amusement earthquake.”
It doesn’t seem likely to do much damage…
