As MLB’s Home Run Derby ends, track fires knocks out Citi Field 7 train service

by Benjamin Kabak

Update (11:46 p.m.): New York City Transit announces that 7 train service has resumed with residual delays. If you’re walking, mosey on over to the nearest 7 train stop. If you’re still around the stadium, your train will be there soon.

Talk about bad timing: A few minutes before tonight’s Home Run Derby wrapped up at Citi Field, a track fire near 103rd St. shut down all 7 line service from Flushing – Main St. to 74 St.-Broadway. The MTA is urging customers to to take the Q66 bus or the LIRR at Flushing, Mets-Willets Point or Woodside-61 St. However, it’s very crowded near Citi Field, and I’d suggest making the 2.5-mile walk from Citi Field to meet up with the 7 or grab the E/F at 74th St. as a reliable alternative. With a critical mass, it’s a perfectly safe walk. I’m not going to be up for too much longer, but if anything else happens, I’ll update this post.

I am guessing a spark from the wheels hit the one piece of combustible trash that the MTA’s awesome cleaning track cleaning system missed.
/s just in case anyone misses it.

I would like to point out that the fire caused more than just the one stop at the stadium to be knocked out. According to the alert I got, it was between Main St & 74th St.
The good thing is that the service was restored some 26 minutes later (again, based on the alerts I received).
I do admit that of all the lines in the system, if you’re going to have a track fire at that time, the #7 line was probably not the best one to have it on, due to the way-above-average number of passengers waiting to go somewhere.

Have look at the twitter pics. Damage was done. Crush loaded people going to the station, past midnight.

Going out to the Futures game on Sunday, there was a smoky condition at the Vernon-Jackson station around 1:45, with firefighters on the scene. Does anybody know what happened in that situation? I felt like my train might have been the last one through for a while, but I don’t think that ended up being the case.
