If I have the opportunity to write more on Friday, I will. I haven’t had a chance to chime in on the endless re-blogging of I Quant NY’s claim that $19.05 is the best amount to use to fill a MetroCard. I’m unsurprisingly a bit skeptical that this is some kind of vital New York City lifehack. More on that later.
Meanwhile, the MTA hasn’t given any further word on the early opening of the Montague St. Tunnel, but I’ve heard service could be restored any time between Saturday night and Monday morning. Regarding the D shuttle, the signage at W 4th indicates that it uses the Uptown F track. Presumably this is misplaced signage and it actually uses a D track, right? (From my understanding, there would be no switches for a train reverse-running on that track, plus it would interfere with the F’s operation.) Is there work taking place on the Manhattan Bridge causing the D split?
The shuttle train will run only on the D track. It will not infere with the F service. It is single tracking I believe and terminating at Grand Street then reverse back.
I think it is due to Manhattan bridge work.
Single track?
The $19.05 thing is a good tip for tourists (if they’re not there long enough for the 7-day pass to make sense), but for regular riders it shouldn’t matter since you should just keep reloading and there’s no real benefit to zeroing it out.
Exactly what I said when I saw it make the rounds.
Yeah for an ongoing rider the benefit is…. being able to throw away your metrocard and pay another dollar for a new one?
In general I recommend Easypay anyway. I cant remember the last time i used a metrocard machine.
There’s one missing: Jamaica Center-bound E trains also skip Van Wyck Blvd until the 22nd.
I’ve known about the $19.05/$30.95 options for years thanks to the MetroCalc app. I was surprised there was no mention of it in the I Quant NY columns.
Who is I Quant NY? I feel like I walked into an alternate internet.
It’s official! R train service resumes Monday September 15th at 5:30AM
Official according to whom?

Cuomo’s making the announcement official on Montague Sunday afternoon. Since it’s also noted on Subchat that today is the 50th anniversary of the R-32s entering service, and they began their lives on the BMT’s Southern Division, it would be fitting to shift a set off the C or the J for the first run through the repaired tunnel. But you know Cuomo and the other pols would go wild if the oldest cars still in service (as opposed to the obvious museum fleet cars) greeted them at Whitehall for the trip through the Montague tubes.
Quoting from the MTA’s website:
“Regular service through the Montague Tubes resumes at 11 PM Sunday, Sep 14.”

MTA R train schedule with it running though Montergue Street effective September 15, 2014.
