While I’m still waiting for you all to RSVP to my party, I have another little bit of self-promotion to plug this evening. At around 7:30 p.m. tonight, I’ll be making another guest appearance on NBC New York’s news hour with Chuck Scarborough. I’ll be talking about Joseph Lhota and his expectations, Transit’s plan implement line segment shut-downs and a recent report on the successes of Select Bus Service on the East Side. Tomorrow morning at the bright hour of 7:15 a.m., I’ll be on Fox 5’s Good Day New York to discuss the line segment shut-down. If you’re around a TV, give it a watch. I’ll post the video as soon as I can.

Reminder: Second Avenue Sagas 5th Anniversary Soiree
Let’s do this again now that it’s not late on a Friday afternoon. As hard as it is to believe, this little site of mine is turning five years old at the end of the month, and what better excuse to we need to have a party. On Thursday, December 1 at 7 p.m. in the Vice Room at The 13th Step on 2nd Ave. between East 9th and 10th Sts., join in the birthday bash for Second Ave. Sagas. Everyone is invited, and admission is free. We’ll have some food, some sweets and a cash bar. Stop by for some subway schmoozing, grab a beer and say hi. It’s been a great five years because of you, my readers, and it’s time to celebrate.
For those who are going to attend — and that should be every single one of you — I have a small request: Please RSVP on the EventBrite page for this event. As I need to have a rough headcount, registration is free. Looking forward to seeing you all there. [Second Ave. Sagas Soiree]

Video: Talking MetroCard futures on NBC

Last night, I made an appearance on NBC New York Non-Stop’s Nightly News with Chuck Scarborough to talk about the future of MetroCards. For regular SAS readers, this is a topic well covered in recent months as the MTA gears up to phase out the MetroCard in exchange for a tap-and-go system revolving around bank cards and an MTA Card. If you missed it last night, you can check out my appearance in the video embedded above. Enjoy.
Talking MetroCards on NBC New York Nonstop
As the MTA moves its long-standing plans to replace the MetroCard into gear, the city’s media outlets are starting to take notice. Will we see a debit/credit card-based system? Proof-of-payment expansion? A proprietary card? Or perhaps a combination of all four? Tonight, as part of NBC New York’s Nightly News with Chuck Scarborough, I’ll be on NBC Non-Stop’s 7 p.m. show. I’m not sure what specific time my segment will air, but it’s will likely be between 7:15 and 8 p.m. For channel listings, check out this page. Be sure to tune in, and for those who miss it, I’ll try to post a video tomorrow.
Finding SAS in other places
On this lazy Sunday afternoon, I just wanted to take a second to pimp my site. In addition to constant content here, you can find more Second Ave. Sagas on Twitter and Facebook. On Twitter, followers receive instant notification of new content as well as lively discussions about livable streets, tidbits from the subway and the occasional comment on New York City movies. Check it out and be a fan.
Media Hit: SAS on FOX 5 news at 10
Just a quick heads up: I’ll be making a TV appearance on the FOX 5 evening news at 10 p.m. tonight. I’ll be talking with Ernie Arnastos and Nina’s Pizzeria owner Marcelo Ronchini about the impact Second Ave. Subway construction has had on neighborhood businesses, a topic I covered this morning. Producers told me earlier today that the segment should be on at around 10:30, and for those of you with Cablevision, a stream of the newscast is available online. I’ll try to find a video of it after it airs.
Media Hit: CBS’ Eye on New York
For those insomniacs and early-risers among us, I wanted to alert you to an upcoming media hit. I’ll be on CBS 2’s Eye on New York program later today to talk about the MTA and its impending fare hike. The program airs at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, and Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign and I speak with host Dana Tyler for a segment on transit. If, like me, you plan to be asleep at 6:30 a.m. this morning, I should be able to post the video later this week. Otherwise, set your DVRs and VCRs. I promise you it’s well worth it.
One last time: SAS talk tonight
For the final reminder: I’ll be speaking tonight at Gelf Magazine’s Anatomyof the Big Apple event in DUMBO. For all the information about the event, check out the Facebook invite (and follow Second Ave. Sagas on Facebook while you’re at it). The doors at JLA Studios open at 7 p.m., and the talks will start at 7:30 p.m. I’ll be giving a brief presentation on a few subway-related topics, and then I’ll take questions afterward.
Additionally, as part of the build-up to the event, I took part in an interview with Eric Yun. We talked about Jay Walder’s tenure, the upcoming fare hikes and the perceptions and political role of the MTA in New York City. Check it out here, and hopefully, I’ll see you tonight.
