Weekend work, movie filming impacting 11 lines

Not much to say here on a night when this happened to the Yanks in Kansas City. You get service advisories for the weekend instead, and I’ll have more content later in the morning.

Note the first entry. I can honestly say I’ve never seen a 15-hour train diversion due to a movie filming. I hope someone’s getting some money out of that one. Otherwise, that seems like a pretty flimsy reason to skip a reasonably popular station.


From 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, May 6, downtown 1 trains skip 125th Street due to movie filming.

  • To this station, customers may transfer to the M4 bus at 137th Street (free transfers issued) or take the downtown 1 train to 116th Street and transfer to an uptown 1 train.
  • From this station, customers may take the M4 or M104 bus to 116th Street (free transfers issued) and transfer to a downtown 1 train.


From 12:01 a.m. Sunday, May 6 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 7, 3 service is extended to New Lots Avenue due to platform edge, mechanical and electrical work at Fulton Street and renewal of switches north of Borough Hall. Note: 3 trains operate express in both directions between Chambers Street and 96th Street.


From 12:01 a.m. Sunday, May 6 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 7, there are no 4 trains between Brooklyn Bridge and New Lots Avenue due to platform edge, mechanical and electrical work at Fulton Street and renewal of switches north of Borough Hall. Customers should take the 3, N, Q or R instead. Note: 4 trains operate local in both directions between 125th Street and Brooklyn Bridge.


From 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., Sunday, May 6, there are no 5 trains between Grand Central-42nd Street and Bowling Green due to platform edge, mechanical and electrical work at Fulton Street and renewal of switches north of Borough Hall. Customers should take the 4 (operating between Woodlawn and Brooklyn Bridge.), Q or R trains instead. 5 trains run every 20 minutes between Dyre Avenue and Grand Central-42nd Street.

  • For service between Grand Central-42nd Street and Bowling Green, customers may take the 4.
  • For service between Brooklyn Bridge and Bowling Green, customer may use the nearby Cortlandt Street, Rector Street and Whitehall Street R stations, served by the uptown Q and Brooklyn-bound R trains during this time.

Some bus schedule adjustments; some weekend work

Earlier this week during the MTA Board members, Transit put forward a plan, as they often do, to adjust bus service schedules along a series of routes. In July, 17 bus routes will see altered plans with 12 lines suffering from reduced service and five lines seeing added buses. As is often the case when the MTA cuts service, people are none too thrilled.

This short bit from The Post pretty much sums up the public reaction to the move. With an intentionally inflammatory headline, the article focuses on the popular routes — the M23 and Flatbush Avenue’s B41 — that will see longer headways at various times of the day. The changes themselves are cost-neutral to the MTA but will have an impact on riders.

According to the Transit materials, these schedule changes are “a product of NYC Transit’s continuing effort to review and revise bus and subway schedules to ensure that they accurately meet customer demand and are in compliance with with MTA Board-adopted bus loading guidelines.” Some schedule changes are due to surface transit conditions as well. According to the staff summary, the changes will add somewhere from one to five minutes of wait time on some lines while reducing it on others. Most buses will end up with capacity at around 95 percent.

So it this a service cut? In the past, I’ve always been very hesitant to embrace these scheduling changes. While we don’t want empty buses running along our streets, we also don’t want to reduce service, and by first establishing load guidelines that make buses more crowded than we would prefer, the MTA Board can then cut service to meet those new load guidelines. In 2010, they did so extensively to meet budgets.

Furthermore, by cutting bus service even just a little, buses become less convenient. Their riders are more willing to pursue alternate routes than subway riders are, and a longer wait will inevitably lead fewer people to take the bus. For the bus to thrive, in other words, it has run frequently and reliably. So a few lines will suffer with fewer buses at various times during the day. These buses will be more crowded and less frequent. If we want to encourage transit use, that’s not a desirable outcome at all.

Reminder: FASTRACK on 8th Ave; ‘Problem Solvers’ at the Transit Museum

The Eighth Avenue FASTRACK removes subway service from western Manhattan.

A pair of reminders on this Monday afternoon: Everyone’s favorite weeknight maintenance program returns to the 8th Ave. line tonight. Running from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night this week, FASTRACK will result in the following service changes.


No service between 59 St-Columbus Circle and Jay St-MetroTech. A trains run via the D and F between 59 St-Columbus Circle and Jay St-MetroTech:

  1. Via the D line icon between 59 St-Columbus Circle and 47-50 Sts.
  2. Via the F line icon between 47-50 Sts and Jay St-MetroTech.


C service to Manhattan runs until 9:30 PM. Brooklyn-bound service runs until 10 PM.


No service between 7 Av/53 St and World Trade Center. E line icon trains are rerouted to the F line icon in Manhattan:

  1. Trains run via the F line icon between 5 Av/53 St and 2 Av.
  2. The 2 Av F line icon station is the Manhattan terminal for E line icon trains to/from Queens.
  3. No trains between World Trade Center and W 4 St.

After interviewing Sarah Kaufman in February, I’ll be sitting down on Wednesday with Michael Frumin for an hour-long discussion on the ins and outs of MTA BusTime. The hour-long session, which will include an audience Q-and-A, starts at 6:30 p.m. in Brooklyn Heights. Doors are at 6.

Frumin is a systems engineering manager at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority where his focus is developing real-time bus tracking and customer information systems using open technology. His prior work in open source software, open data, web applications, and data analysis span the public transportation, finance, and online media industries. Weekend work on 18 lines and a baseball nostalgia special

As the suggestion of a few readers, I’m trying something a little new this Friday. I’m going to post the weekend service advisories now so that they wind up in people’s inboxes in the morning. This will allow the SAS faithful to better plan their weekend trips. (You can get SAS posts emailed to you once a day via this link.) I’ll have regular content later in the morning, and then, I’ll bump this post to the top for Friday evening and the remainder of the weekend.

Before we jump into the service advisories, though, some trainspotting news to address: As the Yankees gear up to open their home schedule later today, Transit is celebrating with a Nostalgia Train. The Low-Vs that ran to Yankee Stadium from 1917-1969 will make a trip on Friday from Grand Central to Yankee Stadium along the express tracks. The train leaves at noon, and Stadium-bound straphangers will have plenty of time to revel in subway history before the game’s 1:05 p.m. start time. Were I heading to the Stadium today, I’d hop this train, but alas, I am not Bronx-bound for Opening Day.

And now the weekend’ changes. It’s a busy one.

Good news: Coney Island-bound F and Church Ave.-bound G trains will once again stop at 15th Street-Prospect Park and Fort Hamilton Parkway starting on Monday morning.

Bad news: The rest of this weekend’s service changes. Subway Weekender has the map.

A light load of weekend work for St. Patrick’s Day

Friday already, huh? These weeks just fly by sometimes. Subway Weekender has the map and notes that the light work schedule is likely due to St. Patrick’s Day. Transit has to keep the subways running for the drunk hoards of folks roaming around the city. Personally, I subscribe to Chris’ take on the holiday, and I’ll be out celebrating my dad’s birthday anyway.

In other news, I’m hearing that the Smith/9th St. station along the F and G trains will not be reopening until the fall. Original estimates had the station returning to service some time this spring. I’ll try to confirm this development next week.

Anyway, here are the service changes. You know what to do.


From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, March 18, Woodlawn-bound 4 trains skip 138th Street-Grand Concourse due to platform edge survey at 149th Street-Grand Concourse.
