From FML to something mundane

By

We had a good chuckle on Tuesday when the FML Internet meme popped up on Transit’s new subway signs. Predicted as a possibility in late March, with the M destined for 6th Ave., the BMT/IND connection at 14th St. became a hotbed of humor (and some inappropriately self-righteous outrage) for a day before the MTA quenched the blog-fueled fire. They would, said Transit officials, change the signs as soon as they can.

And so, via SAS reader Robert C. comes visual proof that the MTA did indeed follow through on their promise. Nothing, it seems, inspires actions quite the threat of some inadvertent profanities in the subway system. Anyway, all’s well that ends well, and without further ado, the before-and-after:

  1. Maybe if you blogged that the service cuts, Second Avenue Subway, and 7 Line Extension somehow represented some other Internet memes, they’d fix those overnight too.

  2. LOL…I live near 14th street and…honestly, I would have loved to keep the FML thing, it would give me a giggle every now and then as well as something to talk about. It would make the atmosphere of the MTA less uptight, that’s for sure!

It’s only a matter of days before a spiteful New Yorker comes up with an obscene initialism for LFM.

I like how the orange lines are now BDFM. It sounds so much like BDSM that it made me laugh when I read it.

I guess I’m the only person who found this whole issue silly. I don’t think it was worth the effort to go change the signs.

It was only one station, though, right? And they’re just vinyl adhesives, from what I understand. I don’t think that constitutes a lot of effort.

You’re not the only one. This could have blown over in six months after those few “in the know” moved on to some other fad – instead it’s become a footnote to subway history that will never go away.

  6. Ron says:

It’s not as cool, but LFM stands for “Looking for more” in games like World of Warcraft.

  7. Bolwerk says:

Now it stands for “Long Freaky Member.” Suck it, MTA.

  8. Jack Mehoff says:

    LFM: LastnightI Fuckedyour Mother

  9. Jack Mehoff says:

    LFM: Lube-Free Masturbation

    Lovely Fart Monster

  11. Mariusz says:

In MMO gaming LFM means “Looking for more” ;)

  12. Jason B says:

I’m hoping the conductors of the 1/3 trains will still say “Transfer to the FML trains” or they overlook this too when programming the computer on the 2 train.

    • Rich Gilberto says:

They’re programmers who map out the trains announcements, so I will be VERY disappointed if they don’t make it “FML”
