While transit employees are gearing up to field complaints from irate customers next week when the fare hikes go into effect, the MTA has reprogrammed the MetroCard Vending Machines. The hulking beasts that dispense the cards will be automatically programmed to adopt the new fares on Sunday. Anyone want to place bets on the first reports of MetroCard Vending Machines that start changing the new fare before the hike is set to start? We all know how reliable the MTA is with their technology. [amNew York]

There was a crowd of people this morning standing and reading the Hike Alert signs this morning at 86th and Lex. Is this hike really still news to anyone? I assumed it was covered pretty well leading up to this point, yes?
How much do you have to spend to get a metrocard that is a whole-even dollar amount? If you spent $7 you get 7 times 1.15 or $8.05. (25 years ago a know I passes the math regent but now I only remember that this has something to do with algebra)
I can’t believe they’re considering putting Metro North tracks on the Tappan Zee Bridge. That thing was built in 1955 with cheap steel and had a life expectancy of 50 years. It costs millions of dollars every year to hold it together with bandaids and scotch tape. Every time I drive over it I prey it hangs together long enough for me to make it across. That rusting pile of angle iron can’t handle any trains!
Uh, sorry, that comment was meant for the item above.
The idea is to rebuild the bridge, if I understand correctly.
