Second Ave. Sagas wasn’t around when the MTA unveiled architectural renderings of the 96th St. rehab on the West Side IRT. But we are around today, and Curbed has a great a great illustration, above, of what the completed station will look like.
The scan is from a union trade magazine that, amusingly, predicts a future in which MTA construction projects are completed on time. But utopia New York aside, that’s a pretty sweet picture considering the disastrous state of the station in renovation right now.

What need is there for this extravaganza?
Ben,
You probably know this station as well as I do. I think the contractors are already about 4 months behind on the reno; a presentation on the CB7 website said the widening of the 95th/96th street median was supposed to take place in late April, and it only happened last week. That said, the renovation hasn’t really had any impact at all on the 93/94th street side, and the contractors have done a good job mitigating the 95/96th street entrance difficulties. Unfortunately, the renovation was planned so that traffic wouldn’t get squeezed at all, but pedestrians are now roped into an impossibly narrow sidewalk on both sides of B’way from 96th to 95th. It’ll be more enjoyable, in about 2 1/2 more years.
I live on 95st and watch the work on a daily basis. The new entrance will be closer to me so I don’t mind waiting the 3 years.
