This is the story of Carolyn Hopkins, the woman behind some of the prerecorded announcements that provide the soundtrack to our subway commutes. The CBS news story is perfect fodder for whiling away the final hours of work on a Friday afternoon. (Via WNYC’s Tumblr)

TTC won’t be using humans for this anymore.
Ah, a real human. Beats the hell out of the speak-n-spell voice on BART.
I miss the odd disjointed (but real human) voice of LIRR platform announcements, that from what i could tell, put recorded words and phrases together.
“The. Westbound Train. For. New York. Scheduled to depart at. 6 oclock. Has. Been. Reported at. Freeport. Running. On Time.”
Maybe this woman will announce a new 7 Line? Cool idea…

Dang. I had imagined someone a lot younger and better looking. Now it’s ruined for me. :p
But she has no gag reflex…
It would seem to me that most young peoples’ voices lack the authoritative yet soothing quality that is necessary for public address announcements.
Am I the only person here who would prefer to suffer his subway commute in silence? Spare me all the idiotic crap like the “Important message from the NYPD”, the warnings not to hold doors, not to walk between the cars, that sexual harassment is a crime in the subway too (really? I thought it was OK in the subway), to please give up your seat to the elderly, disabled or pregnant persons, etc, etc, etc. Please spare me!
very cool story
