Late last night, a CSX freight using Metro-North’s Hudson Line to tote away some garbage derailed across both tracks near the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx, and service into Manhattan on the Hudson Line has been suspended since then. As of this afternoon, train service along the line remains suspended “until further notice,” the MTA announced.
As alternate routes go, the Harlem Line will be honoring Hudson Line tickets and LAZ parking permits. Hudson Line train service is operating only between Poughkeepsie and Yonkers with a shuttle bus offering service to the 1 train’s northern terminal at Van Cortlandt Park-242nd Street. For anyone hoping to take a Hudson Line train to tonight’s Jay-Z/Justin Timberlake concert at Yankee Stadium, reconsider those plans. It’s a giant mess.

Anyone here going to the concert? If so how will you be getting there?
I’m in Rockland County…was planning on driving to tarrytown and taking the Hudson line….but that’s not gonna happen, haha. Also thought about driving like a half hour to White Plains…but that’s basically the same as driving to the stadium, so we’re doing that.
Consider driving to somewhere in Harlem accessible by the 4 or D? Maybe you can park for free and then not worry as much about the traffic afterwards.
I don’t see any notice on Amtrak’s site about delays on the Ethan Allen Express. Is the derail east of where the Empire Connection? I guess it’s too much logistics to send trains that way to Penn. Also a good example of how Metro North to Penn could help with issues like this.
Good point. They say it is in the rock cut, which is east of the branch off to Penn Station.

The line to Penn is not electrified. That is more of a problem. But the diesels could make it.

I wonder why this wasn’t arranged. MNR’s diesel locomotives can operate on third-rail, so they could have just run limited service via the Empire Connection, which would probably be better than the bus shuttle from Yonkers.
But there must be a reason, because that’s too obvious.

The FRA mandates that all passenger trains in the US be beefed up for supposed freight compatibility. Why not require that freight trains using passenger-primary lines have real improvements to increase passenger rail compatibility, including a more stringent inspection regime, better rolling stock maintenance, and weight limits to limit the ROW maintenance needs?
Why not wait until we find out what caused the derailment?
This is CSX’s 20th Derailment this year , when the FRA going to go after them for unsafe operations….they had another derailment today in Virgina.
CSX had a huge derailment in Baltimore near Camden Yards a few years ago. It was in a tunnel just beyond the yards, and shut down MARC’s camden Line for about a week.
Who is responsible and do they pay damages to customers?
