Video Idiot of the Day: Ridin’ on the outside

by Benjamin Kabak

Via Gothamist and Daily Intel, this one’s making the rounds today…

While the MTA frequently announces that it is both illegal and highly dangerous to ride on the outside of subway cars, I’ve never actually seen anyone do it. That is, never until know. This video lays it out as it should be. This is an idiot riding on the outside of the car. While the other straphangers seem to be cheering this on, I’m with Dan Amira of the Daily Intel:

If a subway surfer hitched himself onto our train, we wouldn’t be laughing and cheering him on — we’d be pissed off and snitch on him as soon as possible. Sorry to be a wet blanket, but kill yourself on your own time. The rest of us have better things to do than sit in a stalled subway train for an hour as they clean you off the tracks.

Seriously.

I hope this kid gets killed.

I hope his momma tries to sue the city.

And i hope they charge her for the cleanup of her stupid bleeping son.

I agree with you on that. His family does not deserve a penny if they were to sue the city for wrongful dead. This brainless idiot, who wasn’t using his head at the time of the incident, should know better not to ride on the outside of a subway car.

They should also charge her for the time lost by everybody on (or waiting for) the affected trains.

There was a speight of roof surfing by yutes about 7-8 years ago that ended when a few wound up splattered against the low overpasses on the Sea Beach line and found out humans don’t bounce back well from those types of things as Wile E. Coyote. My guess is this kid survives, but the video spawns some copycat outside riders until 1-2 of them also don’t make it to their destinations.

Only takes one wayside signal or equipment box…

Perhaps the MTA warnings should come with a graphic picture.

The express cuts twenty minutes off my route and the trains are less crowded. The local ran for two years too long. Anyone who says it doesn’t make a difference for the majority of people is crazy. I would work late nights and maybe one or two got off at most local stops. It’s one to one now. I only wrote this bc the awful conductor made the express train local mid trip. I can’t go back to that shit show. Lol.

I don’t know which express you’re referring to (the Brighton, maybe?), but it certainly doesn’t cut twenty minutes off your route. The Brighton express cuts about five each way.

If your trains are less crowded, then someone else’s trains are more crowded, unless ridership dropped.

Conductors don’t decide how trains are routed.

The sad part is that if he did die, the family would’ve sued and almost certainly would’ve won.

It’s his chromosomes, pleading to be eliminated.

In recent weeks, I have had to talk a few teenagers and scold them out of riding in the gangway between cars. As with suspicious activities, “if you see something, say something”. Preferably to the person, otherwise to an MTA employee. For the safety of the riding public, this behavior cannot be permitted.

Maybe the MTA should play less announcements that are “… an urgent message from the New York City Police Department” and more about riding the outside of subway cars too. After all, we don’t drown them out or anything…. (today on my commute from 110th on the 6 to 176th on the 4, the announcement was made on platforms and in cars no less than six times; four times at the 125th station while waiting for a quick transfer and twice in the cars).

I nominate this kid for a Darwin award (pending death, of course).

What’s messed up is that the MTA actually spends time and money creating ads and announcements telling people not to do this…

Unbelievable what the world comes to when you have to actively tell people Not to do something so ridiculously stupid.

Are there signs at the top of the GW towers telling people that its dangerous to jump? Why don’t we just put signs at bus stops telling people that stepping in front of a moving bus is dangerous??

Absurd that our tax money pays to keep such stupid people alive… can only hope this guy wins a Darwin award – for the sake of humanity if nothing else
