Photo: The signs of South Ferry’s reopening

by Benjamin Kabak

We know the old South Ferry loop is set to reopen in April, and all signs are pointing to this impending recommissioning. While exiting at Times Square this afternoon, I spotted the above sign hanging on the wall. It’s a familiar one to riders of the 1 train, and it serves as a reminder that we’re getting back an old station with all of its warts.

This sign will soon be going up in 1 trains across the city, and although it has a few more languages and some snazzy colors at the top, it’s a throwback to the days before the new South Ferry terminal opened. There’s still no official timeline on the when the new station will be rebuilt and rehabilitated, but at least ferry-bound riders and those trying to reach Battery Park will have convenient West Side subway service starting in just a few weeks.

Well, that’s a first: MTA posters are no longer in just Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, or English.

This has been pretty common for awhile, at least with the DONT BECOME A STATISTIC (dont fall on the tracks) posters next to the doors on the trains.

Yes, but with these “DON’T BECOME A STATISTIC” posters, it was only in these languages.

Back in ye olden days (i.e., before 2009) 1 trains used to take the loop in a hurry, and then be held at Chambers to re-set the departure schedule. This time, I wonder if it would be better if the ‘hold’ was moved to Rector or Chambers on the downtown side.

It would definitely irk riders anxious to hit their Ferry connection, but it would give passengers more time to trek to the front five cars without fear of having the doors close on them before they get past the conductor’s position.

Also, in the even MORE olden days, you could just walk through the train to get to the first five cars.
The conductors should now be re-taught to make sure that anybody who has stepped off the train at Rector has reboarded before the doors close.

Why?

WHY?
Because, obviously, YOU would not like it if you had to wait for the next train just because you stepped off at Rector in order to get to the front of the train!

Actually had that happen to me at Rector Street about five years ago. The conductor gleefully (i kid you not) closed the doors on me as i was walking from the 6th to 5th cars so i could get off at South Ferry. I couldn’t believe anyone could be so mean. When i turned to the conductor’s booth and gave him a “what the hell, man?” speech, he literally smiled and laughed. I ended up walking to SF from Rector and missed my ferry and waited 30 mins for the next boat.

There has to be a special room in Hell for transit workers.

No, I’m just saying that whoever gets off at Rector might not get back on.

The MTA should really consider articulated cars for replacements for the R62s and R62As. Although, the station will re-close before that ever happens.

Remember that 145th St on the 3 train is still a short station where you have to be in the first 5 cars as well, so conductors have continued to make these scripted announcements on every uptown 3 train as it crawls up Lenox.
